Swinomish Tribe to dedicate Story Pole to Skagit Valley College

Posted on Friday, April 6th, 2012

The Swinomish Indian Tribal Community will hold a Traditional Raising Ceremony for the Story Pole being dedicated to Skagit Valley College (SVC) on Monday, April 16 at 2:30 p.m. The ceremony will take place at the southwest corner of the Gary Knutzen Cardinal Center at SVC’s Mount Vernon Campus. The event will include remarks by Brian Cladoosby, Chairman of the Swinomish Indian Senate, Dr. Thomas A. Keegan, SVC President, and Margaret Rojas, SVC Board of Trustees Vice Chair. The public is invited to attend. On behalf of Skagit Valley College, the SVC Foundation commissioned master carver and Swinomish Tribal member Kevin Paul to carve the Story Pole. The carving took several months for Paul to create from his home in La Conner.
“Skagit Valley College is honored to welcome the Swinomish Indian Tribal Community to our campus,” said SVC President Dr. Thomas A. Keegan. “This magnificent Story Pole, so carefully crafted by Kevin Paul, will serve as a symbol of the ongoing relationship that SVC enjoys with local tribal communities. In addition, it will be a welcoming beacon to all who visit Skagit Valley College now and into the future.”
The event is free and open to the public.
