• Amtrak Cascades Service Development Plan - public comment period

    January 23, 2023
WSDOT wants to hear from you about how we can enhance the Amtrak Cascades intercity passenger rail service between Portland, OR and Vancouver, BC. We’re developing a Service Development Plan (SDP) that will guide improvements to the train service over the next 20 years. Enhancements like additional trips, faster trips, and trips with different stopping patterns on the current route will be considered. We’ll also look at greater connections to other forms of transportation, to enhance the multimodal transportation system in our state.

Our current phase of work is defining the Preliminary Purpose and Need for the service enhancements, as well as the range of alternatives that will be analyzed in the next phase of SDP work. The draft Preliminary Purpose and Need statement is available for public review through February 24. You can find a copy of the document on the project website. We encourage you to submit your comments on this proposed statement.

Please help us publicize an upcoming public webinar on Tuesday, February 7 from 5:30 to 6:30 pm to share information about the project. We hope you can attend and that others from your organization will attend as well. The log-in link can be found on the project webpage.

We also hope you’ll encourage your network to take a 5-minute survey about their travel habits and what’s important to them for intercity train travel. The survey can be found in several languages at: www.surveymonkey.com/r/CASCADES-2023.

Your organization can provide a valuable perspective about opportunities to make intercity passenger rail more accessible and useful in station communities and we hope to hear from you.
