Board Member Spotlight: Cate Anderson of the Children's Museum of Skagit County

Hailing from the mid-west and Pennsylvania originally, Cate moved to the Pacific Northwest in 2003. She graduated from Davis & Elkins College in Elkins, WV, 1985, also completed her Montessori Primary Teaching Program in 1985 from Scarsdale, NY. While a student and serving as a Montessori preschool teacher and child care center director for five years, Cate organized and taught community education classes for children aged 3-16 years.
She went on to work at Davis & Elkins College in an Academic Counseling program for high risk students, and helped to found a reciprocal college program at Huttonsville Correctional Institution. Cate was the Community Relations Coordinator for in-patient psychiatric and chemical dependency units in West Virginia, and then ran an out-patient medical office in West Virginia, Nebraska and Idaho. Along the way, she was a professional horseman and also worked as a Tax Preparer for H & R Block. Cate is the first Executive Director of the Children's Museum of Skagit County, having started with the museum in the final construction phase in the first location in downtown Mount Vernon. The award winning museum moved to Burlington in early 2008. Cate has been instrumental in the planning and development in exhibits for both museum locations, as well as the recent expansion. Over the years Cate has taught numerous classes and workshops for children, young adults and parents. She has served on the board of a women's shelter, and also on a founding board for a teen hotline and ultimately became their first executive director. She has consulted with her step-daughter who has started a children's museum in Fairbanks, AK. Cate is currently the Co- Chair of the Children’s Council of Skagit County. Cate became a member of the Burlington Chamber of Commerce board in November of 2015 and became Treasurer in 2017. Having been appointed by Mayor Sexton, she sits on the City of Burlington Lodging Tax Committee.

About me: I was born and raised in the Bay Area, however, having lived in the Pacific Northwest for more than half my life, I now consider myself a Washingtonian! That said, it is likely you will find me vacationing in the sunshine when I am taking time off! My husband and I have five kids ranging in age from 24 to our youngest (twin girls) who will be seniors in high school at Mount Vernon High School next year. Our older kids are starting to span throughout the states as they are pursuing careers of their own which is very exciting! In our spare time we do love all that Skagit County has to offer and enjoy spending our time outside and near the water. When I am not working or with my family, you will often find me doing anything fitness related as my personal passion is anything health & fitness related. Through this passion, I enjoy that I am able to help people feel comfortable in their own skin through a virtual platform with a health, fitness and skincare coaching business.
