EDASC Up Close is a monthly behind-the-scenes look at programs, activities and policies integral to economic development in Skagit County. Economic development often takes place behind the scenes for months and even years as relationships form and deals are finalized. This series is designed to provide a better understanding of how EDASC works to be your hub for sustainable and inclusive economic growth.
MOUNT VERNON – EDASC and the EDASC Foundation are set to merge into one organization in 2020, following an October joint board vote.
The move, which turns EDASC into a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, streamlines operations for EDASC while opening the door for new grant funding opportunities.
The EDASC Foundation has primarily been involved in overseeing Leadership Skagit, a leadership training program facilitated by EDASC and Skagit Valley College.
What does this mean to those who take advantage of EDASC programs and services?
Absolutely nothing, said EDASC Director of Finance Audra Ramerman.
“The real changes will be behind the scenes,” Ramerman said. “It’ll improve organizational efficiencies, allowing us to save administrative time. We won’t be balancing two sets of books, maintaining two boards of directors and recording two sets of taxes.”
Said EDASC CEO John Sternlicht, “This is better organizational management and we will be able to carry out more programming because we aren’t spending time on duplicative administrative work.”
EDASC has been a 501(c)(6) nonprofit membership organization since it was formed in 1972.
When the merger is completed at the new year, EDASC will become a 501c3 nonprofit corporation. It will still have members (Investors) and serve a public good of creating a stronger, more sustainable economy, and educating a diverse and inclusive cadre of civic leaders.
The EDASC Foundation board of directors will dissolve. A new EDASC Education Committee will form in its place to oversee Leadership Skagit and EDASC’s other education programs.
EDASC’s mission statement will also be reworked to incorporate EDASC Foundation’s focus on education.
