• FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: New Solid Waste rates in effect starting June 1

    May 10, 2022
New solid waste rates will go into effect starting June 1, 2022:
    • General solid waste at Skagit County Transfer and Recycling Station and the Sauk Transfer Station will increase from $101 to $103 per ton.
    • The minimum charge for residential waste disposal will also increase from $18 to $20.
Recycling and household hazardous waste drop-off will remain free for households, and rates at the Clear Lake Compactor site will remain at $7 per 32 gallon can.
“The Solid Waste division is funded entirely by disposal and user fees. This rate increase is part of a rate structure that was approved in 2019,” said Solid Waste Division Manager Margo Gillaspy. “Incremental increases ensure that our system remains fiscally sustainable.”
Under the approved rate structure, per-ton rates rise incrementally each year, ending in 2023. The rate for general solid waste began increasing by $2 per year starting in 2020 and will top out at $105 per ton. The minimum charge for residential waste also began increasing by $2 per year starting in 2020 and will top out at $20. Public Works assesses the Solid Waste rate structure periodically to ensure that the system remains fiscally solvent.
