• Gold Star Lawn Displays set up for Gold Star Veteran Families in Skagit County

    November 04, 2019
Displays will be up throughout November in honor of Veteran's Day
Burlington, WA: The Skagit County Veterans “Gold Star Family” Committee has put up lawn displays for the Gold Star Families in Skagit County. The term "Gold Star" describes a family member who has lost a loved one in military service. The Gold Star first made an appearance during World War I after being placed over a service flag's blue star when a service member was killed in combat.
These honorary displays are made up of a gold star and two flags. The Burlington Chamber of Commerce and Tom Sheahan worked together to purchase, create and put up the gold star lawn displays for these Gold Star Families in the month of November.
Veteran Tom Sheahan spearheaded the committee and came up with the concept to honor these families. Burlington Chamber of Commerce Operations Director, Steph Vervaart and her veteran dad Raymond Rees, were honored to be able to volunteer their time to place the gold stars in the yards of Gold Star Families in Skagit County.
The "Gold Star Family" committee is still able to put up Gold Star displays for families. To submit a family for gold star recognition, please visit burlington-chamber.com/goldstar or contact the chamber by phone at 360-757-0994.
