• Secret Harbor Launches Annual Walton Foundation Match Campaign this Winter

    November 10, 2021

Secret Harbor is a nonprofit child placement agency in Burlington, Washington, serving youth and families in Whatcom, Skagit, Island, and North Snohomish counties.

This winter, donations made to Secret Harbor between November 15th through January 31st 2022 will be matched up to $10,000 by the Jerry H. Walton Foundation.

All donations directly support every youth in Secret Harbor’s care. Donations are used to support Secret Harbor’s three existing programs: Residential Group Homes, Therapeutic and Traditional Foster Care and In-Home Support services.

There are an estimated 7,600 kids in Washington’s foster care system, with a shortage of around 5,000 licensed homes in the state (Washington Fosters). The pandemic has strained resources for children in the system, resorting many children to be placed in hotels. Around 80 percent of children and youth in foster care suffer significant mental health issues, compared to 18-22 percent of the general population (National Conference of State Legislatures, Northwest Foster Care Alumni Study). Donations made to Secret Harbor provide services for youth in their care, which include psychology appointments, and/or counseling and alternative therapies like music or equine. Managing mental health while healing from trauma is essential for the youth to succeed in their placements.

In addition to supporting Secret Harbor’s programs and youth mental health services, money is also needed for their Kids Fund, dedicated money to ensure that youth in your programs have what they need: school supplies, new glasses, sporting equipment, braces, etc.

Secret Harbor’s Walton Foundation Match Campaign begins November 15th and ends January 31st. For more information or ways to donate, call Megan Juenemann (360) 755-5700 x 465 or visit www.secretharbor.org/donate/.
