August 29, 2019Board Member Spotlight: Gary Englund of Skagit Skate
Established in 1999 by owners Gary and Karen Englund, Skagit Skate has been providing family and community entertainment and sport in Skagit County for almost 20 years. Coming from a long line of rink operators, the Englund's are well versed in what it takes to successfully run a roller skating establishment. Owner Gary was introduced to the skating business at age 7 when his father Eric opened a Rink in Everett.
His love for the skating and entertainment industry grew throughout his childhood and drove him to purchase his own rink with his wife Karen in Centralia, Washington in 1990. The Centralia Rollerdrome became the Englund's life. The family lived and Breathed their business and skating. From running the business to playing hockey with their 3 boys, from speed skating to roller derby. The Englund's were never far from their beloved rink.
In 1998 Gary and Karen were presented with the opportunity to move their rink and expertise to the beautiful Skagit Valley. Knowing how much the community had enjoyed and appreciated recreational skating with the previous rink (Roller Frolic), they jumped at the chance. In 1999, Skagit Skate was born and with it, skating came back to the valley. The expertise and devotion the Englund's provided made Skagit Skate extremely successful.
Gary and Karen Englund are very proud of what Skagit Skate has become. They are extremely excited to celebrate the rinks 20th birthday with the valley that helped make it such a success.
