• Skagit County Commissioners declare October 11-15, 2021 Flood Awareness Week

    October 08, 2021

Today, the Skagit County Commissioners signed a proclamation declaring October 11-15, 2021 Flood Awareness Week in Skagit County. Skagit County has been taking time in October to highlight flood awareness and prepare for the upcoming flood season since the 1970s.

“Skagit Valley is one of the most picturesque and fertile watersheds in Washington,” said Commissioner Janicki, who currently serves as Chair of the Board of Commissioners. “But rivers flood. Each year, it’s important we connect with the community and relevant Statewide partners to prepare for the upcoming flood season. That’s why we recognize, and host, Flood Awareness Week each year.”

Commissioner Ron Wesen said, “Flood Awareness Week brings together the community, and its stakeholders, to discuss current conditions and get prepared for the flood-fight ahead. In addition to helping our community get prepared each year, official recognition of Flood Awareness Week and its activities help us keep FEMA flood insurance rates discounted by 25 percent for Skagit County residents."

Want to participate? Now is the time to get prepared for flood season!

Commissioner Browning said, “Now is the time to think through your family’s emergency preparedness plans. Do you have an emergency kit and go-bag ready? Do you have a plan for where you’ll go if you need to leave your home? Where will you get up to date information about current conditions during an event? All of these things are important to figure out ahead of time.”

Information about flooding in Skagit County, and some helpful flood preparation resources, can be found at www.skagitcounty.net/flood. Skagit also prepares a Flood Awareness Week booklet each year, which will run in the Skagit Valley Herald and La Conner Weekly News the week of October 11. You can find that booklet online here.

Skagit County offers a variety of alert tools for residents, as well. You can sign up for CodeRed Alerts, follow @SkagitGov on Twitter, or sign up for news releases to receive key emergency information before, during, and after an event.
