Root to Rise Mural – A Celebration of Culture and Community
Burlington’s Root to Rise Mural – A Celebration of Culture and Community
More than just a splash of paint on a wall, the Root to Rise mural is a vibrant symbol of Burlington’s cultural diversity, community spirit, and artistic expression right in the heart of downtown. Commissioned by the City of Burlington and created by local artist Christen Mattix, this large‑scale mural brings together art, heritage, and local identity in a joyful visual story.
Located in downtown Burlington, Washington, the mural spans approximately 14 feet tall and 63 feet wide and was painted during the late summer of 2022.
At its heart, Root to Rise celebrates Mexican folklórico dance and the strength of women and families across generations. The mural features five dancers of varying ages twirling in colorful skirts—a tribute not only to the beauty of movement but also to the deep roots of cultural traditions that are passed down through family and community.
The imagery in Root to Rise goes beyond dance:
Strawberries and runners reference the Skagit Valley’s rich agricultural roots and symbolize growth and connection.
The dancers’ vibrant skirts and expressive posture embody joy, resilience, and community pride.
The mix of ages portrayed—from toddlers to elders—echoes the theme of roots and growth, reinforcing the idea that strong communities flourish when they honor their histories while embracing change.
Artist Christen Mattix engaged with Burlington residents throughout the mural’s creation, making the piece not just a work of public art but a collaborative expression of local life and identity. Her research included speaking with members of the community, including folklórico dancers, to ensure the artwork reflected lived experiences and traditions.
Today, the Root to Rise mural stands as a beloved landmark—welcoming visitors, celebrating cultural heritage, and adding color and meaning to Burlington’s public art scene. It’s a reminder that art can connect us to our past, inspire the present, and uplift the future.
